On July 31st, the Portland Sea Dogs hosted a special Maine Strong Night at Hadlock Field, transforming a regular baseball game against the Erie SeaWolves into a heartfelt event that honored the victims of the tragic Lewiston shooting last fall. This evening showcased our community's unity and commitment to healing.
We were honored to join the Portland Sea Dogs for this important night and especially grateful to have our own booth at the event. This allowed us to directly engage with the community, share our mission, and expand our outreach. A part of the proceeds from ticket sales through our promotional link directly supported our foundation’s efforts to help our community.
The Sea Dogs’ team planned the evening with care, aiming to positively impact the community’s healing journey. Players wore unique Maine jerseys, inspired by the historical Pine Tree Flag, featuring a heart over Lewiston, symbolizing unity and remembrance. These special jerseys were auctioned off later, with all proceeds going to local recovery initiatives.
A key moment of the night was the ceremonial first pitches thrown by survivors of the tragedy alongside children of one of our board members, Nick Abel. This gesture was a powerful display of the community's strength and commitment to recovery.
The Maine Music Society enhanced the local atmosphere by performing the national anthem, while the Auburn Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors, adding to the event’s dignity.
The evening also recognized the vital roles of local businesses, first responders, and community leaders who have been instrumental in supporting the community since the tragedy. Our foundation’s booth became a lively hub for discussions on support and community initiatives, engaging many attendees.
Adjacent to our booth was the Maine Resiliency Center, based in Lewiston, Maine. Sharing this night with them was particularly significant as they are dedicated to aiding the recovery of individuals and communities affected by trauma. The center provides essential services such as counseling, support groups, and educational resources, making a profound impact on our community's healing process.
Maine Strong Night went beyond just a baseball game. It was a deep celebration of our community’s strength and resilience. We are profoundly grateful to have been part of it and for the continued support from our community.
This event demonstrated that by coming together, we can face challenges and grow stronger, truly embodying the spirit of Maine Strong.
