As we start a new and exciting part of our journey, we're very happy to share big news: the start of the Maine Strong Memorial Foundation. This isn't just a new name; it's a big step forward in how we plan to reach out and help across our wonderful state of Maine.
Our story began in the wake of tragedy—the heartbreaking loss of 18 lives in the Lewiston, Maine shooting in 2023. Among the victims were Joe Walker and Ron Morin, beloved figures in the Lewiston/Auburn softball community. Initially, a small softball tournament was organized to raise funds for Joe's and Ron's families, which quickly evolved into a larger event involving 25 teams. Sponsored by Hammond Lumber Company, this tournament extended support to the families of all 18 victims and provided aid to survivors. In just two weeks, our collective efforts raised $207,853, showcasing the immense strength, resilience, and compassion within our community.
Our first annual softball tournament was a way to bring people together after the devastating event. The way the community came together showed us the power of unity and inspired us to do more. With your amazing support, what began as a small local event has grown to touch all parts of the state.
The Maine Strong Memorial Foundation carries the legacy of the 18 individuals lost in the Lewiston shooting and our First Annual Lewiston Strong Memorial Softball Tournament forward, embodying our commitment to the entire state of Maine.
Looking ahead, the Maine Strong Memorial Foundation envisions a future where our efforts ripple throughout Maine, bringing people together not just in remembrance, but in a collective endeavor to build a stronger, more compassionate community. We see a path forward that involves not only annual memorials but a series of diverse events and initiatives designed to unite, heal, and strengthen our bonds.
At the heart of our foundation is our new logo. It features the shape of Maine and includes 18 birds flying, each one representing a person we lost too soon in Lewiston. This logo is very special to us; it's a tribute, a reminder, and an inspiration for everything we do.
The colors in our logo are also full of meaning. The deep blue color shows our deep commitment and stability. The shades of blue change from dark to light, symbolizing our journey from sadness to healing and hope. These colors tell the story of where we've been and our promise to keep going strong.
As we grow, we'll keep focusing on what's most important: community, kindness, and the ability to overcome tough times. Whether it's raising money, helping out in the community, or spreading the word about important issues, we're here to make a real difference in the lives of people all across Maine.
